Summarise your career history...
Following an MBA in Insurance and Risk Management at Cass Business School, I moved to Hong Kong, and later Singapore, with a commercial lines insurer running risk management, underwriting and claims management businesses across South East Asia. Returning to the UK, I moved to a Lloyd’s broker to run the marine cargo business through a period of rapid expansion and corporate acquisitions. After a few years I was a UK insurer with strong growth ambitions. I took over management of the commercial lines division of NIG and ran that business through a period where we moved annual commercial SME premium income from below £35m to in excess of £100m, maintaining good underwriting profitability and merging the business with first the Churchill group, and then RBS and Direct Line. I later established the start-up MGA Arista, with backing from Canopius and Equity Red Star. With a great management team and talented staff, Arista grew to £80m GWP, moving into both operating and underwriting profits by year three, before selling to Towergate after eight years. Following a short period working for Towergate I was approached to join the Advent business.
How do you spend your spare time?
Running (more slowly now) with the Hash House Harriers, hill walking in the UK and abroad, and adventurous foreign holidays – I was among the last foreign holiday makers to visit Syria before chaos broke out in that fabulous country.
What is your most unusual hobby?
Probably running with any group of Hash House Harriers, in the UK and abroad.
Most people don't know...
I was at school with Richard Branson, and at university did some door guarding/bouncer work with Rick Stein. Arista, as satisfying as it was, should really have been a lot bigger and more famous!
